Firearm Safety Rules
Firearm safety is essential to prevent accidents and ensure responsible handling. The following are the Four Universal Firearm Safety Rules that apply in all situations, whether you're at the range, hunting, or handling firearms in other contexts:
Summary:
Treat every firearm as if it’s loaded.
Never point the firearm at anything you’re not willing to destroy.
Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
Be sure of your target and what’s beyond it.
By following these rules, you ensure safe and responsible firearm handling.
4 Universal Firearm Safety Rules
1. Treat Every Firearm as if It’s Loaded
Always assume that a firearm is loaded, even if you believe it is not. This rule ensures you treat the weapon with respect and caution at all times.
Never make assumptions about the state of a firearm without personally verifying that it is unloaded and safe.
2. Never Point the Firearm at Anything You Are Not Willing to Destroy
Always keep the muzzle (the end of the barrel) pointed in a safe direction.
Even if you are certain the firearm is unloaded, the muzzle should never be aimed at people, animals, or anything you don’t intend to shoot.
A "safe direction" generally means pointing the muzzle toward the ground or in a controlled direction, depending on your surroundings.
3. Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger Until You Are Ready to Shoot
Do not place your finger on the trigger unless you are ready to fire. Rest it outside the trigger guard along the frame of the firearm.
This prevents accidental discharge due to premature trigger contact.
4. Be Sure of Your Target and What’s Beyond It
Always identify your target and what is around and beyond it.
Bullets can travel through targets or miss entirely, potentially hitting unintended objects or people.
Know your target’s surroundings, whether it's at a shooting range, in a home, or outdoors.
Additional Firearm Safety Guidelines:
Always Secure Your Firearms: When not in use, firearms should be stored in a secure, locked location, away from unauthorized users, especially children.
Use the Correct Ammunition: Ensure that the ammunition matches the firearm you are using. Using incorrect ammunition can cause malfunctions or damage the firearm.
Maintain Your Firearm Properly: Regularly clean and inspect your firearm to ensure it functions correctly and safely.
Wear Proper Protection: Use ear and eye protection when shooting to prevent damage to your hearing and protect against flying debris.
Know the Laws: Be familiar with local, state, and federal laws regarding firearms ownership, storage, transportation, and use.
Avoid Alcohol and Drugs: Never handle firearms when under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substance that could impair your judgment.
